MOJAVE Time Lapse Movies of AGN Jets

These selected movies are linearly interpolated time lapse animations of the parsec-scale jet evolution in the MOJAVE AGN sample. Movies of other AGN in the MOJAVE sample can be accessed directly from their individual source pages in our data archive.

In the total intensity movies (click on a thumbnail image), the pseudocolors represent 15 GHz total intensity. In the linear polarization movies (click on a source name), the pseudocolors represent fractional linear polarization, and are superimposed on total intensity contours. The sticks represent electric polarization vectors, and are superimposed on linearly polarized intensity contours plus a single lowest total intensity contour. The full-width half-maximum interferometric restoring beam dimensions are represented by the cross at the lower left of the images.

We have also produced an annotated movie of the quasar PKS 1222+21 which is a good example of a superluminal, accelerating trajectory, and is intended for general audiences.

For our 2015 study of MHD waves in BL Lacertae, we produced an annotated movie showing the whip-like action of the jet ridgeline in response to Alfvén waves propagating downstream on the longitudinal component of the magnetic field.
